This grass prospers in sunny sites with a wide variety of soils. Is a swaying fine textured clump forming grass. The crisp green blades are arching and extremely narrow. Blooming plants are about 1-2' tall and 1' wide.

Insignificant flowers appear in May on inflorescences of staminate and pistulate spikes which are not showy but are noticeable and persist into July. Mass in moist, lightly shaded areas near ponds or streams.

Tiny buffy colored flowers with red tinges emerge in fluffy panicles above the foliage in August-September. Foliage should be left standing throughout the winter for visual interest and to provide protection for the crowns.
