- Foliage: Like Corn, Sorghum is a genus of plants in the grass family, with characteristic long, arching blade-shaped leaves.. Seventeen of the twenty-five species are native to Australia.
- Pests and Diseases: Stalk borers, corn worms and bores, soil fungus of several types, rusting of the stalk and leaves. Do not grow in the same bed two seasons in a row or the risk of fungal infection is high. In the later stages of ripeness, exuded sap is very sweet and begins to drip from the leaves, attracting bees and wasps. Pay attention when tending the plants. Most species are gentle, but will sting if crushed or trapped.
- Fruit: Although this plant produces copious amounts of grain seed which can be eaten, ground or used as animal fodder, the actual produce is in the sap contained in the stalk. Search on YouTube for sorghum syrup production
- Propagation / Germination: Plant one-half inch deep, four feet apart, keep moist, sprouts usually emerge in 10-15 days
- Diameter: 3 feet
- Height: 8-12 feet
