Buttonbush

This unusual native shrub is great for moist or wet locations in the landscape where it will form lots of very fragrant pincushion shaped flowers in early summer that are a magnet for many species of butterflies.

In the meantime, I have temporarily healed it into one of the vegetable-garden beds , pot and all. Buttonbush is a native that I had never seen at any of our local nurseries and figured I would have to buy either online or from a mail-order native nursery.

The 1/2" lightly fragrant, white tipped in purple tubular flowers of the Chinese Buttonbush are born in 1" wide, Sputnik-looking, ball-like clusters that are produced throughout summer and into fall.

1" powdery-blue to purple blooms are borne in profusion from spring to fall on this durable rounded perennial. It normally returns from the roots in spring and often reseeds itself.

Fragrant white spherical flowers appear in mid-summer. Plants bloom on new wood so pruning is best done in early spring. Flower heads are unique looking, like pincushions, and are very attractive to bees, butterflies, and beneficial pollinators.

It can be successfully grown in average garden soils provided that you give it extra moisture during dry periods. Buttonbush is generally found growing near streams, ponds, ditches and other consistently moist sites.
